Gym, fitness center, place of torture … whatever you want to call it, I have a few questions about it.
I’ve actually pondered each of these thoughts before, but since all three of these things happened this very morning at my gym, I thought I’d ask.
So wise people of the internet, please help me understand the following:
1. When there is a row of 10 (of the same pieces) of cardio equipment, and I am the only person on one of the machines, why do you come over and get on the machine RIGHT NEXT TO ME? Seriously, a one machine buffer is not only adequate, but it’s polite. If the machines are crowded, totally understandable. When the gym is a ghost town, give a person a little breathing room. Please and thank you, btw.
2. Food at the gym. Actually, let’s rephrase, horribly unhealthy food at the gym. Either for sale, or given out FREE as encouragement or reward. Not an apple, not a banana, not a kale smoothie, not a bottle of water. I just don’t get this one. It just screams “hey, awesome job on that kickass workout, now let us ruin that workout and sabotage any goals you may have.” I just don’t get this one … what am I missing?
3. Where is her wallet? On the way into my gym this morning, I walked in with two other ladies. They each were carrying their keys, phone, and a bottle of water. That’s it. After checking in, they went straight to the cardio equipment and got to work. My gym is not located in an area where people walk to it. Driving is pretty much essential and I walked in with these ladies from the PARKING LOT. Soooooo, I’m just curious, do people not care about carrying their license with them, or do they leave it in the car? Truthfully, I cringe at the thought of people leaving things of any value in their cars. Mainly because I helped two ladies (parked in the spot directly next to mine) after their purses were stolen from the TRUNK of their car. Apparently, someone watched them get out of the car, and place their purses in the trunk. After the ladies left the parking lot, the “bad guy” came and smashed the driver’s side window, popped the trunk open and made off with their purses. (In broad daylight. In a very busy parking lot. At a very safe park.) Since that day, I have NEVER left ANYTHING of value in my car. I also don’t leave my wallet and keys in an locker without a lock inside the gym, and I can’t tell you how many of those I’ve stumbled upon at the gym. I don’t consider myself a person without trust, but really???
Alright, that’s all I’ve got for now, but I think that’s enough. Please help me understand these things. And please tell me what things about the gym perplex you … I know I can’t be alone in wondering!
I can answer one of them! #3: A lot of workout pants have little pockets in the waistband that hide your ID’s or a key! As for the other two: I wonder the same thing every day at my gym! And I can add #4: Why do people spend the whole time on the cardio equipment texting, Snapchatting, Facebooking, etc? And taking selfies?!
Because they came to the gym for some alone time and not necessarily to work out. I do it often- toddler in daycare and I’m halfheartedly working out
Pocket in the pants totally makes sense! As for #4 – I can’t imagine taking selfies while working out!
I’ll lock my wallet in the glove compartment when I don’t feel like carrying it. The other two, I totally agree.
You aren’t the only one…I find it creepy if someone goes on the machine next to me…it’s like really move the heck over!
I was in the locker room once, I had someone ask me if I had a spare sportsbra?! Like I’m really going to lend that to a total stranger…she also asked for sneakers and socks.
My gym also has pizza once a month and bagels once a month…I’ve seen people come in JUST for the pizza and not spend a second working out.
Whatever happened to the days where you actual worked out and respected people?
Don’t even get me started on some of the staff!
Maybe we should design our own gym…have Mayhem start building it!
xoxo!
What?!?! A stranger asked you for a spare sportsbra?! And socks and sneakers?! That is insane! (Sorry for all the exclamation points, I’m just really REALLY shocked) And yes, let’s get working on our own gym … fantastic idea π
Yeah it’s sketchy! Weird things happen there.
Do you ever come to Massachusetts? We have to work on our design π
Funny you should ask …. we had plans to be in Boston this past weekend, staying through today, but had very last minute things come up. We were SOOOO bummed to not make it as none of us has been to MA yet. Fingers crossed we get another opportunity π
Well I’m close to New Hampshire too…if you are in the area let me know!
It has to happen! It will π
My cell phone cover has little slots for my ID, a credit card and a $10 bill. I never bring my purse to the gym and never leave it in the car for the same reasons as you. The other 2, I’m right there with you!
I think I need this cell phone cover, as it sounds genius π
I long ago heard to never put purses or valuables into the trunk when you arrive. I will sometimes put a purse but usually its something I bought in the trunk when I leave one place, so when I get to the next I just get out and walk away. I dont know if it really helps but I think it must a little.
Yeah, I used to not worry about leaving my purse/wallet in the car as long as I did so before arriving at a destination, but since I saw that “broken into” car, I just can’t do it anymore. Especially since our car also had greasy forehead prints on the windows and we know they scoped out our car too before breaking into the other π
I know it is a bit crazy but I have a “favorite” elliptical at my gym and would take it even if it meant being next to the only person there.
Reasons it is my fav:
1 -It is near the air vent and I am a sweaty Italian so homegirl needs the breeze.
2 – I stream superhero movies to motivate me during my workout and certain spots in the gym get better wifi than others.
3- Some of the other machines are clunky (read: almost broken) and make loud noises when I use them.
That all makes sense to me. And I’m strategic about the location of my machine too (that breeze SAVES me!) And fortunately, none of ours seem to be broken down yet, and that would definitely make a difference. Right now, I have four out of ten that are my “go to” machines, but I’ve needed to use some of the others outside of the “good breeze zone” when it’s been crowded π
1. def machine preference. But I’m telling you, be the out loud singer and you’ll clear your space so others will avoid you. Or find you charming. It can go either way.
2. planet fitness pizza and bagel days? what a way to help derail people from their goals and keep their membership.
3. I secure my good stuff before I get to the gym lot. I don’t trust the parking lot spies nor other members because we had people coming into the locker rooms and cutting off locks to steal purses and wallets. I guess one could wear a spibelt at the gym.
Francesca hit on what I was going to say: some machines are better than others. As to wallets, I leave mine in the car but I place it there before I park so no one sees me hiding it.
