Our friend Lauren nominated us for the #ALSIceBucketChallenge last week and Mayhem was more than excited to participate. (while I was happy to make a donation 😉 )
I thought it was really important for Mayhem to understand WHY people were dumping the ice buckets on their heads, so we sat down and watched the Pete Frates story together. And then we talked about it. She had LOTS of questions and I did my best to answer them in a way that a four year old can make a some sense of.
After that we did a little research and discovered that the ALS awareness ribbon is blue and white striped. Which inspired us to create a paper dress for the occasion.
Then it was time to get down to business.
When Keith asked if she was really going to do it, she simply hoisted her bucket and dumped. Without any hesitation.
You’ll notice that as soon as the water touched the blue crepe streamer paper, the dye began bleeding out…
And then there was the priceless look on her face…
Followed quickly by a celebration.
Which was cut short by the realization that she was turning blue…
She was not impressed…
It took a hosing down, followed by a shower, followed by a bath (with LOTS of scrubbing) to even make a dent.
I worked on the Mayhem while Keith scrubbed our driveway and the sidewalk. Both of which were victimized by our “blue fiasco”.
Word to the wise: that crepe streamer paper, when went, will bleed, and stain!
Mayhem told me that creating a dress for the ice bucket challenge was my “WORST IDEA EVER”. I disagreed and offered that her ice bucket story is clearly “WAY MORE BETTER” because she turned blue at the end.
Bottom line – make a donation. Every little bit helps.
PS – We have a Facebook page we’re going to start using for additional content – if you’d like to follow along you can like us HERE.
This is absolutely brilliant! Best ice bucket challenge I’ve seen – and definitely all the better for the fact that she turned blue.

As soon as I saw the first picture I was taken back to the neighborhood 4th of July parade when I was not quite five. Red and blue crepe paper streamers on my crisp white blouse mixed with squirt guns and sprinklers…. Trust the former four-year old inside of me – Mayhem will never forget the properties of crepe paper streamers.
Love it! Her celebration face gave me a smile just as big. With a great laugh and huge smile I enjoyed every photo again. Tell Mayhem it made a mommy with a migraine so very happy–only as happy as I can get when I see my own two girls. 🙂 Off to get them from school! (We all knew that paper would run but never so bad!)
oh those faces…….her expressions are the best. this is by far my favorite of all the challenge pictures. keep ’em coming. Mayhem makes my day and your captions to each picture are just as great. I love that you found a way to let her know what the ice bucket challenge represents. Keep up the good work Mayhem & mom!! fan request: i miss the mayhem singing (wailing) videos. if she puts on anymore concerts would love to see a post!!
I loved how your showed her the videos and talked about ALS. Great photos (as usual!) and what a beautiful yard! I thought you were at a park!
I absolutely loved this post! I’m glad you donated.
For sure the cutest ice bucket challenge I’ve seen 🙂

Every time I think I can’t love you two more, you go and do something like this. LOVE that you talked to her about the actual disease and cause, as I feel that’s what’s getting lost in the ice bucket mayhem (if you will). Also, her look at the end is TOTALLY PRICELESS.
Yep, couldn’t agree more … I, too, felt like the message was getting lost. If we were going to do it, I felt it was super important that it not just be for “show”. Which we’ve seen a lot. And her reaction to turning blue was hysterical 🙂
There was a great episode of Project Runway a couple of weeks ago when one of the designers sewed dye packs into the seams of the dress so when the model walked through the simulated rain the colors ran into the white fabric and created a whole new fabric – the dress was gorgeous – would be great to see Mayhem play with that idea.
She is so adorable and you are giving her the most incredible childhood!!
