Two weeks ago, we had a very last minute change of plans.
Originally, we were supposed to be heading out of town on a super fun adventure. One that we were excited to share about along the way. But stuff happens and things come up, and said trip had to be postponed.
Bummer.
And instead of the adventurous week we had planned, we found ourselves looking at each other and saying “so now what should we do this week?”
Keith and I had big home plans for this spring. We have lots of spring cleaning to tackle and a million and one projects that we’ve decided need our attention. Like painting the entire interior of our home. Only, we weren’t sure if we were going to do it ourselves or hire someone to do it. Side note: painting is Keith’s LEAST favorite job in the world.
After about a day of deliberating and realizing that we had the time on our hands, we decided to pop on over to Lowe’s and order up some paint.
We started in the master bathroom, and moved on to the master bedroom. We even got a little help from the small person. And then we moved on. Second bathroom, hallway, living/family room, kitchen, dining area …
And then we had to tackle the beast that is our entryway. With 18+ foot ceilings and nothing but an angled staircase, it is a monster to attempt to paint. (We’re not professionals, remember.) But Keith entrusted me to hold on to the extension ladder (to keep it from sliding) and he scaled the walls with a bucket and paint roller in hand. He’s sworn he will never paint that entryway again and I’ve promised to never again ask 😉
And then it was on to the other bedrooms.
Every evening we went to bed exhausted and aching and every morning we got up thinking “we’re that much closer to being finished!”
As the paint was drying, we remembered our plan for adding some decorative moulding to the baseboards throughout the house. (Last fall, we re-floored our entire home {ourselves} and getting the ten+ year old carpet out of this house was one of the best things we could have done for our health.) And now seemed as good a time as any to tackle that as well. Off to Lowe’s we went again. Or maybe is was Home Depot. I’m delirious from all the trips to home improvement stores at this point.
With a saw on the back porch and a nail gun following us as we went, Keith measured, cut and nailed in the new moulding. I followed behind with painters caulk and then a fresh coat of paint over all of the new moulding and baseboards.
Our backs and our bodies have hated us over the past week.
With the painting and moulding nearing completion, it was time for a new kitchen sink. Because the old one was just plain gross. And because, while we’re at it ….
The new sink is now in place and while it feels like we’re on the home stretch, there are a few more projects to tackle.
Which is why Mayhem is currently re-flooring our master bathroom. For real. For the record, the flooring in our bathroom was not in terrible shape, BUT, half of the bathroom was carpeted (gross, right?!) and the other half was linoleum. It’s been (almost!) the only carpet left in our house since the re-flooring project last year and we knew we’d have to remove all of it and put in one new floor.
We’re getting closer. And we’re feeling super accomplished at this point. We basically have a clean/fresh slate throughout the entire home from which to be “design” inspired. There’s still massive clean up to be done and the storage shelves from our design studio are sitting in the center of our dining room. But again, we’re getting closer.
A couple days ago (on the day we would have been returning from our family trip/adventure) I looked at Keith and said, “Hey, you know I was really bummed about missing out on that trip, but can you imagine coming home and just now getting started on all this home improvement?”
He shook his head and laughed.
I’m a big believer in everything happening as it’s supposed to. Yes, we were bummed about the trip, but OMG … I’m SO thankful for the work that’s now behind us!!!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to find a heating pad for my back …
I’m exhausted just reading this. I was painting our apartment 8 years ago. By the time we got done fixing up little problems (like holes covered in duct tape & painted over.. ) then painting base coats I did one and literally a quarter wall and gave up. It’s so bad it’s not even a straight line/stopping point. It’s just where I ended that day and legit gave up.
