This is new.
Don’t get me wrong, these two hit it off nearly instantly and truly get along even better than I had imagined. But they don’t lay down together.
Not next to each other, anyway.
And I’m pretty sure it’s because Moxie has been afraid that Ginger will crush her. Because on a couple of occasions, I have seen Ginger attempt to lay down next to Moxie, but Moxie gave her the brush off. And by brush off, I mean growled at her.
If you’ve ever had 60-something pounds of puppy lean against you, you understand why all sixteen pounds of Moxie is intimidated.
But this week, I’ve seen them laying down together, multiple times. Not up against each other, but next to each other. On the floor. On the (same) couch.
Not their typical.
And it got me wondering as to what’s changed.
Which reminded me that we noticed another new behavior, starting about two weeks ago. Ginger started licking Moxie’s ears. A lot.
And Moxie allows it.
After a few days, I had to google what it meant. Because I was worried that maybe Moxie had an ear infection or something and Ginger sensed/smelled it, and was trying to care for her.
Turns out the ear licking (according to my googling) can be a sign of affection and a submissive behavior.
Ginger’s way of letting Moxie know that she loves her. And that Moxie can be the alpha, I guess.
Well played, Ginger.
You might just get a real life snuggle pal, one of these days.

Just so you know ear licking can cause and ear infection too
