Remember how we had her bedroom painted last week?
Plot twist: her bedroom walls are white again.
Here’s the deal – from the time we found this house (under construction) we had a plan for a certain bedroom to be Sydney’s. It’s the biggest of the bedrooms (besides our’s) and has the best view. BUT, as the move grew closer, Sydney started mentioning that she was a little nervous about being in that room. She has reasons. They are valid and they are private.
So we agreed that she could move into another (smaller) bedroom until she was comfortable. And so we plopped her mattress down on the floor of the smaller room, and waited. A couple weeks ago I asked about how she was feeling about the bedroom situation and she was still unsure and uncomfortable. I asked if there were things we could do to make the bigger feel more like her room and more comfortable, and that’s how we landed on getting the painting done, ASAP.
She opted for the same color as in the last house, and our friend (who painted the room) did an impeccable job. Same paint, same rug on the floor, and we started brining in some of her furniture from her previous bedroom, over the weekend. And quite honestly, the furniture doesn’t fit well. Even though her room is very similar in size, to her last room, it’s configured differently and it was feeling crowded, even without a bed.
Side note: I’ve had tons of people ask if we left her loft bed, or took it down and brought it with us. And while we did intend to leave the loft bed, the new owners asked us to remove it (I’m guessing because they have much younger children and that would be way too intimidating for a young child. Or parent of a young child!.) Sydney was thrilled that we took the bed because we did have the option of rebuilding the loft bed in the new bedroom, though it would need a couple modifications.
I could tell she was struggling to share how she really felt, so we had a girls only chat, and I assured her that her feelings were honored. She shared that she was afraid we’d (Keith and I) would be disappointed if she didn’t move into the bigger room, and I told her that wasn’t the case. She asked if she could keep the smaller room, at least for now. She said that one day in the future she may feel differently, but for now, the smaller room is what she needs.
I knew she loved the loft bed in our previous house, but I also knew that she wasn’t in a hurry to build a new one. We really did want to get that bed off the floor though, and lofting it (at least some) would open up some floor space. So I ran to Target and bought two of these cube organizer units.
And a new type of lofted bed was quickly in the works.
Would love to see the loft bed after adding the cube shelves
